These rules must be read in conjunction with the General Rules for post-graduate studies of the University.

B3

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) DEGREE PROGRAMME

3.1 ADMISSION
  1. A Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) degree.

  2. The honours subject selected by a candidate, save by permission of the Senate, shall be one which he/she passed at third-year level of the BSc (or equivalent) degree.

  3. Particular admission and examination requirements are subject to approval by the Heads of Departments.

  4. In the case of diplomat students, Senate may on recommendation of Faculty Board grant direct admission to an honours programme subject to such a diplomat passing the standard examination in two approved courses at third-year level of the relevant bachelors degree.  Such a candidate shall not be eligible to qualify for the award of the honours degree until he/she has passed the relevant courses for the BSc degree.

3.2

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO PARTICULAR SUBJECTS

 

Applied Mathematics: At least 60% for Applied Mathematics at third year level
Biology:    At least 60% for Biology or Zoology at third year level
Biochemistry: At least 60% for Biochemistry at third year level
Chemistry: A BSc degree with Chemistry as major and passed with at least 60% for Chemistry III and a pass in Mathematics I
Mathematics: At least 60% in Mathematics III
Physics: 60% in Physics III and a pass in Mathematics III or Applied Mathematics III (Prospective students should consult with the Head of Department prior to registration)
Statistics: At least 60% in Statistics III and a pass in Mathematics II
Psychology: A pass mark of at least 60% for Psychology III

Subject requirements not reflected are available from the respective Heads of Department.

3.3

PERIOD OF STUDY

The Honours course shall extend over a minimum of one academic year of full-time study or a minimum of two successive academic years of part-time study.

The maximum period to satisfy all the requirements for the degree shall be FOUR successive academic years.

3.4

A person may be admitted by the Senate as a candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in a subject selected from the following list:

3.5

YEAR MARK

The year mark will contribute 50% to the final combined mark in respect of Biology, Mathematics, Statistics and Psychology, and 20% to the final combined mark in respect of Physics.

3.6

EXAMINATIONS

  1. Examinations are written during the mid-year and end of year examination periods.  The rules pertaining to examinations contained in General Rules 22.2.2 and 22.2.3 are not applicable
  2. Examination papers are written as indicated in the following table:

THE MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE PROGRAMME

4.1

APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION

A person who wishes to be admitted as a candidate shall lodge an application in writing with the Registrar, submitting evidence of his/her academic record and general qualifications in the subject in which the candidate has passed an Honours or equivalent examination, and indicating the line of research which he/she wishes to prosecute.

4.2

REGISTRATION

A person who is admitted as a candidate for the degree will be provisionally registered until the requirement in 4.3 is satisfied.

4.3

REGISTRATION OF A RESEARCH PROJECT

A research project shall, after consultation with the supervisor(s), be registered with the Faculty's Research, Ethics and Publications Committee before the end of June of the year in which the student first registers.

4.4

4.5

RESEARCH

A candidate for the degree of Master of Science shall prosecute during not less than one academic year advanced study or research, or both, under the guidance of a supervisor appointed by the Senate either in the University or in an institution deemed by the Senate to be part of the University for this purpose.

4.6

FULFILMENT OF REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE

At the close of the period of research every candidate for the degree shall:

  1. present for the approval of the Senate a dissertation, which must constitute a substantial contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the subject chosen, and must be satisfactory as regards literary presentation and in a form suitable for publication

  2. if required by the Senate, present himself/herself for an examination or test, oral or written.

4.7

RENEWAL OF REGISTRATION

A candidate must renew his/her registration annually before the closing date as published in the calendar.

4.8

PERIOD OF STUDY

The minimum period to satisfy all the requirements for the degree shall be ONE year and the maximum period to satisfy all the requirements for the degree shall be FOUR years.

THE DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY DEGREE PROGRAMME

5.1

APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION

A person who wishes to be admitted as a candidate shall lodge an application in writing with the Registrar, submitting evidence of his/her academic and general qualifications in the subject for which the master of science degree was awarded, and indicating the line of research which he/she wishes to prosecute.

5.2

REGISTRATION

A person who is admitted as a candidate for the degree will be registered provisionally until the requirement in 5.3 is satisfied.

5.3

REGISTRATION OF A RESEARCH PROJECT

A person who is admitted as a candidate for the degree shall, after consultation with the supervisor(s), register a research project with the Faculty's Research, Ethics and Publications Committee before the end of June of the year in which the student first registers.

5.5

RESEARCH

5.7

THE DOCTOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE PROGRAMME

6.1

GENERAL

The degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) is deemed a senior doctorate.  It would normally follow on a PhD and could be awarded to an internationally renowned candidate for high level and internationally recognised research.

6.2

ADMISSION

A person who wishes to be admitted as a candidate for this degree shall lodge an application with the Registrar submitting such evidence of his/her academic and general qualifications and such other information as the rules or as Senate may, from time to time, require.  An indication must also be given of the subject of the work that he/she proposes to present for the degree.

A person who is not a member of the Convocation and who wishes to proceed to the degree shall not be admitted as a candidate unless Senate is satisfied, on the advice of the Board of the Faculty, that there are sound reasons for such admission.

6.3

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

Senate may admit any one of the following as a candidate:

  1. a person who has a Doctor of Philosophy degree of the University of at least two years standing

  2. a graduate of any other university admitted under section 26(b) of the Universities Act, Act No 61 of 1955 to the status of Doctor of Philosophy and who has held the qualification, by virtue of which such admission has been granted, for a period of at least two years.

6.4

CONDITIONS FOR AWARD OF DEGREE

  1. A candidate for the degree of Doctor of Science shall present for approval by Senate:

    1. work of exceptional standard and a record of original and independent research (where only an abstract of the work has been accepted for publication, the full work must be submitted) in a field approved by Senate.

    2. work which has been published and has constituted or shall constitute a distinguished contribution to the advancement of knowledge in that field.

  2. Work which has been accepted by any other university for the purpose of having a degree conferred will not be accepted by Medunsa and the candidate will be required to submit to the Registrar a statement to this effect.

  3. A candidate for the degree of Doctor of Science shall be a registered student of the University for at least twelve months before the degree may be conferred.

6.5

EXAMINATIONS

  1. A candidate shall give at least six months notice in writing to the Registrar of his/her intention to submit his/her work for examination.

  2. Senate shall appoint, on recommendation of the Faculty Board, examiners (of whom at least two shall be external examiners) who are recognised authorities in the field of the submitted publications.

  3. The candidate shall submit, initially, four unbound copies of the set of publications to be examined.  If accepted by the panel of examiners, two bound copies shall be submitted to the Registrar prior to the degree being conferred.

  4. Should the candidate be the co-author of one or more of the submitted publications, he/she will be required to state his/her personal contribution towards such publication(s) in a statement to be submitted to the Registrar together with the submission of his/her publications for examination.
